When To Call The Doctor
1st Baby OR 1st Vaginal Delivery:
Do call when your contractions are: 1) 3-5 minutes apart
2) lasting 30-60 seconds
3) are strong enough that you can't carry on a conversation
2nd (or more) Baby:
Do call when your contractions are: 1) 5-7 minutes apart
2) lasting 30-60 seconds
Contractions: Time your contractions from the beginning of one contraction to the beginning of the next. When your abdomen tightens and relaxes, you are having a contraction. Contractions of true labor have three characteristics, they get longer, they get stronger, and they come closer together. False labor goes away with activity such as walking.
Fetal Movement: Do call if you baby is not moving as it should be.
Vaginal Bleeding: Do call if you have vaginal bleeding like a period.
Bloody Show/Mucus Plug: Do NOT call if you lose your mucus plug (have mucus discharge) or have a bloody show (mucus tinged with blood). These are not true signs of labor.
Ruptured Membranes: Do call if your membranes rupture (water breaks). This may be a sudden gush or a slow leak of watery fluid.
